OrvelOpticians Book an eye test

Independent opticians, London

Let your face choose the frame, your eyes the lens.

Orvel is an independent practice where your eye test, your frames and your lenses come together in one unhurried visit. Browse the collection here, then try it on in store.

Sight tests are carried out only by registered optometrists. You can check NHS eligibility for a funded test before you book.

01Services

Good glasses start with a careful eye test.

Testing, choosing, making and fitting. Everything we do in the practice falls under these four headings.

  1. 01

    Eye tests

Carried out by registered optometrists, with time to talk through how you use your eyes at work, on screens and on the road.

  2. 02

    Prescription glasses

Single vision and varifocal lenses chosen for your prescription and habits, glazed into your frame and adjusted to your face.

  3. 03

    Sunglasses

Prescription and non prescription sunglasses to try in daylight, with lens tints compared side by side.

  4. 04

    Contact lens reorders

Reorders are checked against a valid specification and its expiry date. If yours has expired, we book an aftercare appointment first.

Prescription glasses are dispensed in store, so the collection is for browsing and shortlisting. Face shape suggestions are a starting point; the mirror has the final word.

    03How it works

How your prescription glasses are made

Five steps from your eye test to collection day. At each one we explain what happens and what we need from you.

If you notice sudden changes in your vision, pain or flashes of light, seek urgent care from an optometrist, your GP or the eye casualty service.

    04  Visit the practice

See the frame on your face, not on a screen.

Whether a frame suits you only becomes clear in the mirror. Book your visit and we will set aside the frames on your list and be ready for you.

    • 01

      Time to try

We set aside around half an hour for choosing frames. Ruling a frame out is progress too.

    • 02

      Plain explanations

We explain the lens options in plain words and which ones your prescription actually needs.

    • 03

      A written ready date

You get the ready date in writing when you order, and a call when your glasses are ready.

    05  FAQ

    Questions we hear most

The questions patients ask most often at the front desk. If yours is not here, just write to us.

Who carries out the eye test?

A registered optometrist. Under section 24 of the Opticians Act 1989, only registered optometrists and registered medical practitioners may test sight. The test includes a check of your eye health as well as your prescription.

Am I entitled to an NHS funded eye test?

Many people are, including children, people over 60 and those receiving certain benefits. Tell us when you book and we will check your eligibility before your appointment.

Can I buy glasses through this site?

No. We dispense prescription glasses in store so that measurements and fitting are done properly. Save frames to your list and try them on during your visit.

Can I reorder contact lenses online?

Yes, if your contact lens specification is still valid. We check it and its expiry date before accepting an order; if it has expired, we book an aftercare appointment first.

Can you put new lenses in my own frames?

Often, yes. We check the hinges, screws and frame in store and tell you honestly whether new lenses will fit safely.
